A month on since I introduced you to my indoor grow light garden here and I am delighted to show you the progression and regression so far. Unlike the leggy lettuce I showed last month, the tomato plants and peas are growing strong. You might notice one of the pea plants is sitting on an upside down flower pot. This was done to lift the plants closer to the light as the growth was looking a little stunted. This has helped a great deal.

Although in the previous month the potato plants were growing really well, the leaves turned yellow and limp and I decided to pull them out. This could have other factors rather than the LED grow lights. I had put several potato seeds in each of these buckets, therefore I suspect there were too many. They may also have been over watered however I am not certain on that point. I have started again on the potatoes this time with just a few potato seeds in each bucket. I prepared the potato seeds myself whereas last time they were bought. This is how to prepare them.

As you can see, the avocado tree is flourishing. Its new leaves are a dark green and the leaves are very strong and healthy. Before, the leaves were turning yellow and brown and have since dropped off since this photograph was taken. The avocado tree has been the most impressive and successful so far since it was so close to dying but has done a full recovery.
This month I have also started various fruits like strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb. They have started to come through under the main blue/red LED light, here. Since the lettuce grew so badly, I am regrowing old lettuce stems along with celery, spring onion and leeks as you can see below. Here, I am using old tins with water. Doing this has been somewhat successful and raised my interest in growing with hydroponics.

Regrowing food is a great idea to help with your ability to be self sufficient. Simply place your old stems into a small tub of water and they will regrow leaves. However, don't expect a full lettuce from the regrowth, but there would certainly be enough for a small side salad. I'm doing this as part of an experiment and I do intend to attempt to try growing lettuce again.
One of the main worries I had was whether I would have an influx of flies in my home from growing these plants. This has not been the case so far after a couple of months. However if that does become the case I will have to come up with ways to decrease the problem. Overall, I'm really happy with this experiment so far and after one month since my last post, the plants seem to be doing really well.
In my last post I mentioned concern in that I might be using a great deal of electric to light the LED's however, I received a bill last week which indicated that despite this indoor growing, my bill was still significantly lower than this time last year. I wrote about ways in which I was lowering my electric bills in this blog post if you are interested in ways to save money on your electric bill.
